Why it matters

Financial Knowledge Should
Help You Make Better Decisions

There is no shortage of financial information available today.

The challenge is knowing what matters, how the pieces fit together, and how to apply what you are learning to your own finances.

A budget affects your ability to save. Savings can affect how you manage an unexpected expense. Debt influences your monthly cash flow and borrowing ability. Credit affects the terms available to you when you borrow. And all of those areas play a role when you are preparing to purchase a vehicle or a home.

The Financial Foundations Certificate Program brings these areas together in one structured learning experience so you can develop a stronger understanding of your finances and make more informed decisions moving forward.

Built around real life

A Financial Education Program
Built Around Real Life

Financial Foundations was designed to help you understand the financial topics that show up repeatedly throughout adult life.

Whether you are trying to get more organized financially, strengthen your savings, understand your debt, improve your knowledge of credit, or prepare for a future vehicle or home purchase, this program gives you a place to build that knowledge step by step.

You do not need a background in finance. You simply need a desire to better understand your money and the decisions you make with it.

Curriculum

Six Foundations.
One Connected Financial Picture.

Six essential areas of personal finance, taught as one connected learning experience.

01

Module 1 — The Budget

Understand where your money is going—and what you can do with what remains.

View module details+

A budget is more than a list of bills.

It helps you understand the relationship between your income, your expenses, your financial obligations, and the money available to save or use toward other goals.

In this module, you will learn how to identify take-home income, distinguish between fixed and variable expenses, account for expenses that do not occur every month, and build a monthly budget that reflects your actual financial life.

You will also learn how to evaluate your spending and make informed adjustments when needed.

You will explore:

  • Take-home income
  • Fixed and variable expenses
  • Monthly budgeting
  • Non-monthly expenses
  • Spending adjustments
  • Using your budget to support financial goals
02

Module 2 — Savings

Build savings with purpose, consistency, and a clear understanding of what you are saving for.

View module details+

Savings plays an important role in financial stability.

This module helps you understand that savings is not just one account or one goal. Short-term needs, emergencies, and retirement each serve different purposes.

You will learn how to think about an appropriate savings rate based on your current situation, how to begin building an emergency fund, and how to address some of the common barriers that can make consistent saving difficult.

The module also introduces retirement savings and employer-sponsored 401(k) plans while maintaining a clear distinction between financial education and individualized investment advice.

You will explore:

  • Short-term savings
  • Emergency savings
  • Establishing a savings rate
  • Building an emergency fund
  • Overcoming common savings barriers
  • Making savings more consistent
  • Retirement savings basics
  • Employer-sponsored 401(k) plans
03

Module 3 — Debt

Understand what you owe, how debt affects your finances, and the options available for addressing it.

View module details+

Debt can serve different purposes, but it can also place significant pressure on your monthly finances when it becomes difficult to manage.

This module helps you understand the role debt plays in everyday financial life, distinguish between different types of debt, and recognize when debt may be creating financial strain.

You will also examine how debt affects cash flow and borrowing power and compare several common approaches to paying debt down.

The goal is not to tell you that one strategy is right for everyone. It is to help you understand your options so you can evaluate which approach may be appropriate for your situation.

You will explore:

  • Different forms of debt
  • Debt that may support longer-term goals
  • Debt that may create financial strain
  • The effect of debt on monthly cash flow
  • Borrowing power
  • Warning signs of debt problems
  • Common debt payoff strategies
04

Module 4 — Credit

Understand what your credit information says and what influences it.

View module details+

Credit affects borrowing opportunities, interest rates, and major financial decisions, yet many people have never been taught how the credit system actually works.

This module breaks down the difference between a credit report and a credit score and explains the primary factors that can affect your credit profile.

You will learn how everyday financial habits can strengthen or weaken credit over time, how to approach reviewing your credit report, and steps you can take to build, improve, and protect your credit.

You will explore:

  • Credit reports
  • Credit scores
  • Factors that influence credit
  • Credit-building habits
  • Reviewing your credit information
  • Improving and protecting your credit profile
05

Module 5 — The Car Buying Process

Look beyond the monthly payment and understand the full financial decision.

View module details+

A vehicle purchase can have an impact on your finances for years.

Yet car-buying decisions are often reduced to one question: “What will my monthly payment be?”

This module helps you look beyond the payment.

You will learn how vehicle price, down payment, interest rate, loan term, insurance, maintenance, and other ownership costs contribute to the real cost of the vehicle.

You will also examine leasing versus buying and new versus used vehicles so you can evaluate the decision based on your finances, lifestyle, and longer-term goals.

You will explore:

  • The full cost of vehicle ownership
  • Down payments
  • Interest rates
  • Loan terms
  • Total borrowing cost
  • Leasing versus buying
  • New versus used vehicles
  • Making a vehicle decision within your financial picture
06

Module 6 — The Home Buying Process

Understand financial readiness, financing options, and the true cost of becoming a homeowner.

View module details+

Being approved for a mortgage and being financially prepared for homeownership are not the same thing.

This module helps you understand the financial factors that contribute to home-buying readiness and why affordability deserves consideration beyond the amount a lender may approve.

You will learn how savings, credit, debt, and your debt-to-income ratio can affect the home-buying process, along with the costs that come before and after the purchase.

You will also explore down payments, closing costs, mortgage discount points, first-time homebuyer programs, different types of home loans, comparing lenders, and ongoing homeownership expenses so you can better understand both the financing behind the purchase and the financial responsibilities that continue after you receive the keys.

The goal is to help you approach homeownership with greater financial understanding and make more informed decisions throughout the mortgage process.

You will explore:

  • Financial readiness for homeownership
  • Affordability versus loan approval
  • The full cost of owning a home
  • Savings and down payments
  • Credit and debt
  • Debt-to-income ratio
  • Closing costs
  • Mortgage discount points
  • First-time homebuyer programs
  • Understanding and comparing different types of home loans
  • Comparing lenders
  • Ongoing homeownership expenses
  • Making informed decisions throughout the mortgage process

From Dinia

Guidance Built
from Experience

Dinia A. Regular, founder of Rockstone Financial Training

There is a reason I wanted Financial Foundations to go beyond simply providing information.

Throughout my experience in finance and financial education, I have seen how often people are expected to make important money decisions without ever having been taught how the pieces of their finances work together.

You may know that you need a budget, but not understand what your budget is actually telling you. You may know that saving is important, but not know how to begin building it consistently. You may know that credit matters, but not understand what is affecting yours.

And when it comes time to buy a car or a home, you can suddenly find yourself making a major financial decision while trying to learn the process at the same time.

I created Financial Foundations to give you a place to learn before the decision is sitting in front of you. My goal is to help you understand the concepts, understand why they matter, and begin looking at your financial decisions with greater clarity.

Because financial knowledge should do more than inform you. It should change the way you make decisions, build stability, and shape what comes next.
